Another Faun

This one is a classic faun... Puck or Robin Goodfellow from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. One of my ongoing design projects.

Landon

It's a porn star portrait, without all the dirty bits. The guy just had an amazing bone.... structure.
(no, really, see!)

La Brea Tar Pits

Here are the results of my little trip to the Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits.
Factoid: My friend Omar tells me that La Brea means tar pit... so basically what we've got is a department of redundancy department thing here. Tar Pit Tar Pits.
Anyway, drawings:

What is it?

I can't remember what this was.... some sort of extinct bird I think.
I drew it during a lecture in my Science and Social Change class one summer. "scanned" it with my iPhone because I'm lazy like that.

Soy Un Fauno

Inspired by the Faun character from Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth

Rather a bit more cuddly than the film version, no?

Amok, Amok, Amok!

A little late to the party but....

I did this illustration of the Sanderson Sisters from Disney's Hocus Pocus while getting in the spirit for Halloween this year. First, the sketch, then the finish:

Dynamic Sketching

One of my favorite instructors passed away Saturday night. I've been terribly depressed about it since finding out this afternoon. Many ArtCenter people are still feeling the shockwaves on facebook. I've already paid tribute to the memory of the wonderful Norm Schureman in my journal... and here I will do it with images. I'm posting a couple of pages here out of my sketchbook from the class I took with him a year ago. This man was truly one of the greatest, kindest teachers and I have been extremely lucky to have learned from him. Rest in Peace, Norm.

Anthem

One of the projects I've been working on for the past year has been Ayn Rand's "Anthem." A dystopian story in which the main character lives in a collective society with no concept of the individual. One of my childhood favorites "The Giver" definitely took some cues from this classic. When researching the story I found it interesting that Rand had written to Disney herself to say that if "Anthem" were ever to become a film, she would want it to be the animated kind. An idea for the story to be developed as a ballet was also thrown around but never went anywhere. So I saw this as an opportunity to try it out. Here are some character sketches.

From the Little Black Book

If you post naughty photos of yourself online, you could wind up in my sketchbook like this boy here. This is actually over a year old, but since the only sketching I have time to do lately is for my grad portfolio, I figured I'd post it here. It's one of my favorites after all. Yes, the boy in the photo was whoring himself to strangers BUT, lo! now he is art. isn't that magical?

From the Little Black Book

Late at night, I make drawings that look like these:

One of my projects is the creation of a "Little Black Book" series of paintings and drawings, done in a single pocket moleskine, and created mostly from found porn images, or those dirty pics gay boys love snapping of themselves and posting on the internet. in my heydey I wanted to chronicle people I'd actually been with, but since I'm just with one person now, I'm sticking to turning found images into dirty sexy sketches.

Sara Streeter as Sally Bowles

"Meine Dammen und Herren, Mesdames et Messieurs, Ladies.... and Gentlemen.... The toast of Mayfair, Fraulein Sally Bowles!"

Not the best photo of my latest painting, but it shall suffice for now. The painting itself maybe needs a wee bit more tweaking here and there but for our purposes here, it's finished. Next it will get photographed at pro quality, and it will be used as my postcard image for GradShow!
