Dino Day with the Boyfriend

Had a Dino drawing day with my boyfriend at the Natural History Museum's new Dinosaur Hall. It's great to be dating a fellow artist (he's super talented. Check out Chrisables.blogspot). Publishing today's doodles - mostly with my new brush pen- whilst watching Jurassic Park trilogy.

Zebulon

Since I met the writer/ astrologer Seraphime at my first show at the Hive downtown, I've been waiting for the lightning bolt to strike. I had been waiting for just the right concept to use her as a model, and for the right amount of inspiration to start a new painting.

When she began posting photos of herself as her character, the space alien Zebulon (apparently no connection to the Rufus Wainwright song of the same name), I had my moment.

Here are the goods so far, the sketchbook work leading up to the finish that's yet to come. The watercolor here is NOT considered a finished painting, just a study.

I've been having a lot of fun listening to spacy music and drawing this retro sci-fi androgynous space alien.... the music of goldfrapp's felt mountain, the tron soundtrack, bjork, and bird and the bee's "ray guns are not just the future".

Best Sketches

Yesterday, I had to compile my 10 best quick sketches for a freelance opportunity... And here they are, some of my fave little sketches. All are 2-5 minutes, and with only two or three exceptions, all are from life.

Double Wattled Cassowary

Zoo Day!

Superbowl Sunday, but who needs football? Went to the Zoo with Trevor, Danielle, and Gina. After a satisfying morning at work, and an even more satisfying lunch of sushi, the zoo trip rounded it all out for a pretty perfect day. Despite the ridiculous traffic entering the damn place that is. I thought more people would be having bbqs or something on Superbowl Sunday.

I was pretty productive, and I feel I've improved since my Dynamic Sketching days. Gotta do this more often.

It's All Over!

I've always been obsessed with Rocky Horror.

What is it?

I can't remember what this was.... some sort of extinct bird I think.
I drew it during a lecture in my Science and Social Change class one summer. "scanned" it with my iPhone because I'm lazy like that.

Anthem

One of the projects I've been working on for the past year has been Ayn Rand's "Anthem." A dystopian story in which the main character lives in a collective society with no concept of the individual. One of my childhood favorites "The Giver" definitely took some cues from this classic. When researching the story I found it interesting that Rand had written to Disney herself to say that if "Anthem" were ever to become a film, she would want it to be the animated kind. An idea for the story to be developed as a ballet was also thrown around but never went anywhere. So I saw this as an opportunity to try it out. Here are some character sketches.

If you post naughty photos of yourself online, you could wind up in my sketchbook like this boy here. This is actually over a year old, but since the only sketching I have time to do lately is for my grad portfolio, I figured I'd post it here. It's one of my favorites after all. Yes, the boy in the photo was whoring himself to strangers BUT, lo! now he is art. isn't that magical?
